Public Transport
Le Mercantour

This section ended up being one of the most difficult with respect to public transport as public transport is cut in 3 areas: the Ubays, the Tinée valley and the Vésubie valley and the 3 don't have connecting busses. Additionally there are a couple of local shuttle buses, but not that many.

Base camp in Larche
Larche - Pont Rouge
  • In summer there is a shuttle from the tourist office in Larche to Pont Rouge every 45 min.
  • Walk to Pont Rouge, take the shuttle back to Larche.

  • Pont Rouge - Bousieyas
We just dropped a car in Bousieyas (drove there with two cars and back with one) and then walked to the car before driving back to Larche. By public transport this would be impossible: only from St.Etienne-de-Tinée there is a public transport connection again (see below).
    Base camp in St.Etienne-de-Tinée
    Bousieyas - St.Etienne-de-Tinée
We drove a car to Bousieyas and started walking. Once back in base camp we used the other car to pick it up again. In case you don't want to hitchhike the only possibility is to walk from Pont Rouge to St.Etienne with an overnight stay in Bousieyas and then return by public transport:
  • Take bus 91 from St.Etienne to Nice
  • In Nice, take bus 51 to Digne-les-Bains
  • In Digne, take bus 68 to Barcelonnette
  • By the time you reach Barcelonnette the only way to get to Larche is by taxi
  • The day can be split in 2 in summer by using the local shuttle from St.Etienne to St.Dalmas-le-Selvage.
    St.Etienne-de-Tinée - Roya - Longon - St.Sauveur-sur-Tinée
  • Park car in St.Sauveur-sur-Tinée
  • Drive back to St.Etienne, or alternatively take bus 91 to St.Etienne.
  • Walk in 3 days to St.Sauveur
  • The first day can even be split in 2 days by taking either bus 91 or the local shuttle to/from Auron.
    Base camp in St.Dalmas-Valdeblore
    St.Sauveur-sur-Tinée - St.Dalmas-Valdeblore
There is no bus connceting St.Dalmas-Valdeblore with the Tinée valley. The only way to get down to St.Sauveur is by taxi, or, as we did, with two cars.
    St.Dalmas-Valdeblore - Utelle
  • Move car to Utelle and we returned by car to St.Dalmas-Valdeblore.
  • Alternatively, from Utelle there are buses down in the valley to Nice and to Roquebilliere
  • Connect to bus 90 to Valdeblore
    Utelle - Levens
There are some possibilities to take bus-on-demand C6 from Levens to St.Martin-du-Var and there connect to the bus to Utelle.
    Levens - Aspremont
Though both towns are connected to Nice, they're not connected to each other by a regular bus line. The only option is to use bus-on-demand C7.
    Aspremont - Nice
There is a direct and freequent bus connection from Magnan (Nice) to Aspremont.
